Andrew Marvell

Andrew Marvell

This lecture will show how the experience of self-division helps us to understand the unsettling effects of Marvell’s finest poems.

Nicholas McDowell is Professor of Early Modern Literature and Thought at the University of Exeter. He has published extensively on the relationships between literature, politics, and religion in the 17th-century and on major literary figures of that period, especially John Milton and Andrew Marvell. His books include Poetry and Allegiance in the English Civil Wars: Marvell and the Cause of Wit (Oxford University Press, 2008) and, with Nigel Smith, The Oxford Handbook of Milton (2009). His major new biography of Milton will be published by Princeton University Press in autumn 2020.
