The Visitor Centre
Our visitor centre is set inside a genuine British Rail MK1 Full Brake coach. It lends itself perfectly to our needs as it never actually had any seats. During use, it was used to carry all the freight, large luggage and other items from the rest of the train. We have cosmetically restored and turned the coach in to our static visitor centre which gives a glimpse in to how the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway used to be. Lots of photographs from when the line was in use can be seen in here along with various artefacts and very descriptive information boards. The coach also houses our small shop selling, among others, railway related gifts, along with tea and coffee.
The coach is accessed by a platform from a small set of stairs. We are working on ways to give accessibility to the visitor centre to all, and once we have this we will update accordingly.
Sir Tatton Sykes
Our locomotive, “Sir Tatton Sykes” is able to give cab rides along our 300ft demonstration line and is great fun! One of 3 originally built for the High Shotton Steel Works in the late 70’s, one has since been scrapped, one is on use on the Docklands Light Railway as a maintenance locomotive, and the other is now with us on the YWR. Ours last saw use at Lindholme Prison and “broke out” in April 2013.
The doorway to “Sir Tatton Skyes” is rather narrow and can only be accessed by a small set of stairs.
