Food and Drink in Hull

Feed your curiosity

Becca Aspin

After arriving in Hull from Leeds as a student 20 years ago, I never left. I loved it back then and it’s only got better with bars, pubs and restaurants to rival that of my former hometown. For a flavour of the city, start by exploring the narrow rooms and cobbled corridors in the historic pubs of the Old Town. Ye Olde Black Boy dates back to 1729, while Old House, a pub by Shoot The Bull, is located in Hull’s oldest domestic building. Grab a table here and you can while away hours with over 40 beers and 20 gins to choose from, not to mention a fabulous food menu. Around the corner you’ll find The Lion and Key. With beer mats on the ceiling this Hull favourite boasts an incredible selection of beer on tap, with many brewed in its own microbrewery next door, while local breweries Atom and Great Newsome, are well worth a sample while you’re in the city.

Walk towards Trinity Market and you’ll stumble upon The Brain Jar, a cocktail bar that serves up a mean espresso martini alongside incredible pizzas. While opposite Hull Minster, you’ll find The Head of Steamwhich serves up the best burgers in the city alongside a killer beer selection. Be sure to try a side of beer battered frickles, they’re delicious. From here, head over to the Fruit Market and make your first stop the rooftop bar at Humber Street Gallery to take in the view of Hull Marina at night alongside music, culture and a contemporary vibe. For gin lovers, visit the Humber Street Distillery, which offers a range of over 100 gins.An array of restaurants to suit all tastes and budget occupy the city’s old fruit warehouses on Humber Street. I recommend Butler Whites, Tapaysa, Buca di Pizza or Thieving Harry’s. For fine dining book a table at 1884 Dock Street Kitchen or for Yorkshire tapas try its sister restaurant 1884 Wine and Tapas. Whatever your tipple, whatever your scene, Hull is brimming with food and drink to rival any other city. Becca Aspin, Local PR Consultant
