Beverleys North Bar Area

Beverley's North Bar Within and North Bar Without form one of the East Yorkshire's most treasured landmarks. These architecturally fascinating streets, divided by the 15th century North Bar, contain one of the greatest concentrations of listed buildings in the region. King Charles I and his 2 sons, stayed in North Bar House whilst trying to persuade John Hotham to surrender Kingston upon Hull during the English Civil War.

The Coronation Garden with its imposing iron gates is a tranquil gem.  Pop to Poma in St Marys Arcade for a huge selection of gelato ice cream flavours and sit and enjoy in this oasis of calm. 

Traffic is limited to single file through the bar arch and controlled by a set of lights.  On street parking is available.

Its premier location, street scene and grandeur has meant specialist retailers, boutique shops, quality restaurants, cafes and traditional pubs have become well established, particularly amongst fashion and style savvy shoppers.

You will find fashion & clothing, home interiors, beauty, cards and gifts. Along with such names as Barbour you will find lots of interesting independent shops.

Pizza Express, Tapas and French cuisine, along with Whites, Beverley’s only Michelin and Good Food guide rated restaurant, can be found in this fascinating part of the town, you will also find a great selection of other independent cafes and restaurants and many pubs all with heaps of character and history. So take time to relax and enjoy the area.


St Mary's Church

See the carving of the March Hare said to have inspired Lewis Carol's Alice in Wonderland in this church situated in North Bar Within.

Browse around the many shops from Barbour to independent and interesting shops, Also take a stroll through St Marys Arcade.

St Marys Arcade

Once the Tiger Inn and converted into a garage in 1907 this now shopping arcade was constructed in the 15th century and is timber framed.


Plenty of coffee stops, cosy cafes, restaurants and pubs including nearby "Nellies" to whet your appetite when you visit this part of Beverey.


North Bar

Grade I North Bar is the only surviving gate which formerly guarded the main entrances to the town. It cost £96 17s 4½d to build in 1409.
