Hardy Water Lilies at Burnby Hall Gardens

Hardy Water Lilies at Burnby Hall Gardens

National Collection of Hardy Waterlilies in bloom mid-June to the end of August.

Details

Come and See the Lilies at Burnby Hall Gardens.

The Upper and Lower lakes at Burnby Hall Gardens are home to a National Collection of over 100 varieties of Hardy Water Lily, making it only one of only two in the United Kingdom. They bloom between June and August each year and transform lakes into a mass of colour, with many thousands of visitors coming especially to see these during the summer.

The lakes at Burnby Hall Gardens were originally constructed around 1904 for fishing by Major Percy Stewart who lived there between 1901 and 1962. However, in the 1930’s, his wife Katharine introduced 50 varieties of Hardy Water Lily to the lakes, beginning what was ultimately to become the fantastic National Collection enjoyed today.

On a symposium visit by the International Water Lily Society in 1993, it was commented that the collection was one of the best collections in a natural setting that they had ever seen.

So, if you’ve never seen the Lilies in bloom, why not come along to see them this year?

The Gardens are open between 10am and 5.30pm daily. Further details can be found on www.burnbyhallgardens.com or by contacting our Visitor Centre on 01759 307125.
