The Hessle Roaders

The Hessle Roaders

The Hessle Roaders photo exhibition captures life in Hull’s former Fishing Community during the 1970s/80s. Three shows during Hull’s 2017 City of Culture created a tremendous response – breaking all attendance figures at Hull’s History Centre with over 8000 visitors. Sir Andrew Motion praised the images when he said, “It looks as if there is no photographer present”.

Photographer Dr Alec Gill MBE began the work whilst studying his Psychology degree at Hull University (74-77). He took over 6500 negatives which capture the pre-digital world when children played street games, corner shops abounded, and the port had a powerful deep-sea trawling fleet.

This exhibition bridges the town-gown divide between city and campus. It will benefit students, academics, staff and visitors alike by providing an insight into Hull’s dynamic Hessle Road Fishing Community during the late 20th century.
