Saltmarshe Hall

Details

One of East Yorkshire’s finest and most elegant – but possibly least-known – country houses is opening its doors on 18th September 2019 as part of the national Heritage Open Days event.

Set in 17 acres of grounds, including sweeping lawns, formal gardens and mature woodland, and with frontage to the River Ouse, Saltmarshe Hall is an elegant and important Grade 11 – listed Regency country house, which has now been developed as a hotel and popular wedding venue.

From the knighting of Sir Lionel Saltmarshe by William the Conqueror in 1067, the Saltmarshe estate remained in the same family for more than 900 years. The present hall was started in 1825 and completed three years later. It descended to Colonel Phillip Saltmarshe (1853-1941), who joined the Royal Horse rtillery and fought in the Afghan and Boer wars. Captain Philip Saltmarshe was the last member of the family. He died in 1970 without an heir and the house was sold to Philip and Sally Bean. In 2009 it was purchased by the Whyte family and has since been extensively renovated.

The house was designed so that the river could be seen from the east and south windows. The rooms have changed in their use over the years. The beautiful garden room was originally the billiard room.

Susan Butler, renowned local historian, will be giving illustrated talks at 11.00 and 2.00 about the hall and the village, both of which will be followed by tours of the gardens. Susan’s own small museum, located in the village, will also be open during the day.
