Tourism is an extremely important part of Hull and East Yorkshire's economy, generating £615million annually and providing 15,000 full-time, seasonal and part-time jobs.
• Hull is home to the UK's most commercially successful Millennium project - The Deep. This fabulous attraction has welcomed a huge number of visitors since opening and continues to offer innovating exhibits to attract people.
• East Yorkshire has five magnificent country houses that are all open to the public and regularly welcome events ranging from classic car shows to battle re-enactments!
• In Hull there are eight free museums for visitors to enjoy including the Ferens Art Gallery and the popular Streetlife Museum where people can experience life in the streets of Hull
over the past 150 years.
• Eight brand-new cycle routes have recently been opened in the Yorkshire Wolds. These are
suitable for riders of all abilities and have been designed to be family-friendly.
• East Yorkshire has over 35miles of beautiful coastline offering golden sandy beaches and
towering cliffs which welcomes hundreds of thousands of seabird visitors every spring and
summer.
• Hull was the birthplace of world-famous MP William Wilberforce - the man who successfully
campaigned for the abolition of slavery in the UK. Hull is now home to the Wilberforce museum,
which celebrates the life and work of the human rights campaigner.
• Hull was centre-stage at the start of the English Civil War when the forces of Parliament and
army of King Charles I fought over control of the town. The siege of Hull was the start of armed
conflict throughout the country.
