Freedom Festival 2016

My take on the Freedom Festival Programme Launch

Freedom Festival 2016

Read how Freedom Festival launched the 2016 program through the eyes of Freedom Festival Ambassador, Kate Ogram.

As the artwork around the Fruit Market tells us, ‘Change is happening’ - and so Butler Whites, the brand new Humber Street venue (so new it’s not even open yet) was the perfect setting for the launch of Hull's ninth Freedom Festival. The Fruit Market's new vibrancy was reflected in the buzz of excitement of the dozens of sponsors, supporters, artists, volunteers and media folk who enjoyed their first taste of this venue on a gorgeous #HullYes midsummer evening – yes, really, it was positively continental!

The themes of the various presentations were varied but a current thread runs through them. This year's Freedom Festival will bring some phenomenal international acts while being very much ‘Made in Hull’; a glorious combination of the shared vision of the arts and industry with a hefty dollop of local people will ensure incredible things happen. As Mikey Martins, Artistic Director, took his place at the neon pink sparkly lectern, the scene was set. Hold onto your seats Hull and enjoy the ride! A short film taster of Freedom 2016's programme was presented to lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, and even ‘ooh-lah-lahs’, as celebrated Sydney Opera House veterans Hot Brown Honey flaunted their burlesque/hip hop wares. From the breathtaking vertical high-rise drama of As the World Tipped, to the graceful beauty of Heliosphere's hot air ballooning ballet, to the charming simplicity of the Vegetable Nanny's googly-eyed marrows and watermelons – Freedom 2016 promises to deliver on Mikey's pledge that we’ll all 'stumble across something amazing'.

Drums will clash to mark the beat of Freedom's opening night again in an explosion of light and fireworks – courtesy of the spectacular show Danbor Talka - and, of course, there's music from far and wide across the weekend. British Sea Power. Bud Sugar. Hull Freedom Chorus. 200+ performances from 30+ countries overall. “A family festival. Unreal. Unbelievable.” Change IS happening; let's all get involved, make ourselves part of that change and make Hull proud.
