Hull is a vibrant waterfront city with a modern European feel but one that is also proud of its rich heritage. The cobbled streets of the old town, dominated by the beautiful architecture of the buildings along them, lead to an array of interesting and varied attractions. The old high street is home to the Museums quarter offering a variety of fascinating museums which form part of Hull's collection of eight free museums.
Wilberforce House is one of those and has recently completed a multi million pound refurbishment as part of the city's bi-centenary celebrations of William Wilberforce, a son of the city who changed world history by tirelessly campaigning for the abolition of the UK slave trade. This museum, housed in the 17th Century house in which Wilberforce was born, evocatively tells the powerful story of slavery and is both compelling and informative.
Just some of the other museums to visit when coming to the city include; The Arctic Corsair, which gives visitors a chance to board a trawler and be given a tour by a former deep-sea trawlerman; The Streetlife Museum of Transport - an interactive and fascinating collection of exhibitions housed on realistic street scenes with experiences including a "ride" in a horse drawn carriage along cobbled streets; and the Feren's Art Gallery, a beautiful building housing an impressive collection of paintings and sculpture works from medieval to present day as well as often accommodating impressive national touring exhibitions.
No trip to Hull though would be complete without a trip to the Deep, the world's only Submarium and a stunning visitor attraction which tells the story of the world's oceans. Literally millions of visitors have flocked to this award winning attraction and have experienced one of the deepest viewing tunnels in Europe and the breath taking underwater lift as they move from the tropical lagoon to the icy polar tanks to view the thousands of fish and seven species of shark.
