Gentoo Penguins at The Deep, Hull

Gentoo Penguins fly into Hull in the first Antarctic penguin display in the North

The Deep in Hull has opened a brand new exhibit called ‘The Penguins of Grytviken’ featuring a colony of Gentoo penguins.

Located in the Kingdom of Ice, the display is home to a group of Gentoo’s penguins which have joined the award-winning aquarium this month.

This £750,000 exhibit gives visitors fantastic views of the penguins across 3 floors, both underwater and on land and features a swimming pool, diving pool, beach area, nesting area and the penguins very own outdoor balcony with views overlooking the River Humber!

These VIP residents… that’s Very Important Penguins will help to explain to visitors about the threats to their habitat, issues surrounding climate change and ocean acidification as well as exploring food chains and animal biology.
The exhibit is themed around Grytviken, an abandoned whaling port in South Georgia, which was taken over by Gentoo penguins in the late 1960s following the demise of the whaling industry, when this and many other sites were left to decay.

And don’t forget, as well as seeing our new arrivals, The Deep is also home to over 3,500 fish including spectacular sharks and rays. Journey from the birth of the oceans into the future and come face to face with hundreds of exotic species.

Don’t miss The Deep’s dive show every day at 2pm (please ask a guide for the days location on arrival). See our divers go into the tanks and feed our animals – it’s not to be missed! Enjoy getting up close with some of our smaller animals at Discovery Corner as well as seeing our Scatter Feeds at the Lagoon of Light.
Finish off your visit with a stop in our brand new sea themed soft play area; perfect for letting the little ones burn off some steam.

And lastly, enjoy a walk through Europe’s deepest viewing tunnel and ride through the 10m tank in our famous glass lift.
