Details

Learn more about how this exhibit has been created (before we add the water!) and hear fascinating facts about the fish who will soon be joining us.

This display will soon be home to hundreds of brightly coloured fish including our very own juvenile zebra sharks who were born and bred right here at The Deep.

Representing where the rainforests meet the reef, the lagoon will reflect the diversity of aquatic life and unique habitats found in and around many of the islands and archipelagos in the western Pacific oceans, from Tropical North Queensland to the outer islands of Palau in Micronesia.

It will boast amazing new corals and large mangrove trees, which are both very important to the health of a coral reef and its surrounding coastline. They provide an essential nursery ground for a number of species amongst their submerged root system.

It will also feature a wave machine that replicates the tidal movements of a true coastal habitat so our animals feel right at home.

Find out all about how the exhibit has been created in ‘Meet the Mangroves’ presentations at 11am, 1pm and 3pm and get up close in Touchpool sessions with smaller creatures such as Hermit crabs, Velvet Swimmer crabs, starfish and sea urchins that are native to British shores at half past the hour throughout the day.

Then it’s time to create your own Lagoon of Light by colouring in your own coral reef scene, or make a fabulous fishy badge in craft corner. Or why not become a deep sea diver at our photoboard?

Make sure you join in with some our regular daily activities too. Watch our divers feed the sharks or clean the tank in our daily dive show at 2pm at Endless Ocean and catch our penguins having a fishy snack at 11:30am and 3pm.

So if you’re look for a fun day out this half term, The Deep is definitely the ‘plaice’ to be!
