Overture 1812 Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony No 12 ‘The Year of 1917’ Shostakovich

Soloist: Callum Smart (violin) Conductor: Andrew Penny

Shostakovich recalls the Year of 1917 in his Symphony No 12, written in 1961 and dedicated to Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution. Callum Smart returns to the Phil as soloist in the evergreen Tchaikovsky Concerto and this all Russian programme begins with the Overture 1812, written in 1880 to commemorate the defence of Russia against Napoleon. In the famous recreation of cannon fire at the end we have ten very special 2017 guests playing Bass Drums!
