In ancient Beijing, Princess Turandot decrees that she will marry the prince who can solve three riddles. Those who fail are put to death. Many accept the challenge; none survives the attempt. But when Prince Calaf arrives at the palace, so dazzled is he by Turandot’s beauty that he is determined to have her, despite the pleas of the slave girl Liù, who is secretly and selflessly in love with him.

This powerful final opera by Puccini, the much-loved composer of Madame Butterfly and La bohème, Turandot includes some of his most famous pieces, including the tenor aria ‘Nessun dorma’. Performed here in a dramatic concert staging by Opera North, it is sung in Italian with English titles.

Music director Aleksandar Markovic conducts this new concert staging of Turandot, directed by Annabel Arden. Tenor Rafael Rojas sings the role of Calaf, returning to Opera North following widespread acclaim in the title role of Andrea Chénier in 2016, Irish soprano Orla Boylan sings Turandot, while Liù is sung by South Korean soprano Sunyoung Seo, making her Opera North and UK debut.
